COLLINGBOURNE AND DISTRICT TWINNING ASSOCIATION

In the early 90's, an adventurous group of our neighbours began  interesting soundings with a view to finding a community in France with whom we could become officially twinned. By good fortune a community in Normandy was found, namely the village of Le Merlerault,  which lies some 80 kms south east of Caen.  Apart from having the obvious like minded ambition of extending a cross Channel hand of friendship, it met the criteria of being within  reasonable distance of a ferry port, of having a population not too dissimilar from that of the combined total of both Collingbournes and Everleigh and of having a similar rural background. After some preliminary visits to no doubt allow the both parties to get the measure of each other, a formal tying of the twinning knot was agreed upon and carried out with all due ceremony and dignity on April 18th 1992 at the Community Centre, Collingbourne Ducis. In Collingbourne Kingston the event is recorded by copies of the Twinning Charter, kept in the Ruth Fisher Room in the village hall, and by the plaque on the village cross. In the years that have passed since its inauguration, the exchange activities of the Twinning Association have led to many valued friendships between individuals and families. Exchange visits between families usually happen on alternate years around Easter time while in the summer holidays it’s the turn of groups of young people.

COLLINGBOURNES AND EVERLEIGH GARDENING CLUB

This club has been in existence for fifteen years. Meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month and may involve speakers or be visits to places of horticultural interest. In February, March, April, September, October and November each year we have visiting speakers covering a wide range of gardening related subjects. During the summer months we have evening visits plus a full-day coach trip in July to a place of national interest.

Some of our members are extremely experienced and knowledgeable, so if you want to know whether a plant is a weed or a garden flower, if a bug us a friend or a foe, or where to put a particular plant, do come and join us at a meeting or call our Chairman Caroline Bouwens on  01264 850250 or Secretary, Patti Marsh (01264 850319)  www.collingbourne-ducis.com/Gardening_club/index.htm

YOUR LINK SCHEME NEEDS YOU

The Collingbournes and Everleigh Link Good Neighbour Scheme exists to offer help and transport for local people in need.  The Scheme consists of volunteers who help by taking people to hospitals, surgeries, collecting prescriptions and other similar transport tasks, as well as undertaking small practical tasks or just calling in for a chat.

This Scheme welcomes new volunteers.  On average volunteers may expect to undertake one or two tasks per month.  Volunteers undertaking driving tasks can claim mileage allowance for these journeys.

So, if you would like to make a real contribution to helping people in our villages by becoming a Link Volunteer, please contact Richard Carter on 01264-850260, for further information.
